"Tim genuinely shocked us with how well he trained our dog to behave. She has been home for almost a month and has retained everything he taught her. Tim dramatically changed our dog and home life for the better. You would be crazy to use any other dog trainer in our area (we tried), many of whom use much more negative techniques than Tim's calm demeanor and training style. You can tell within 5 minutes just how singularly focused on dog training Tim is, and the results speak to that."

Our custom designed Stay and Train Programs provide you and your dog with a clean slate. By taking them out of their daily environment and into my home, we will be able to use that new environment to teach them a new set of rules to live by. The Explorer Program:

There’s nothing quite like enjoying a quiet, peaceful walk with your dog, but when you find yourself constantly following your dog’s nose, when they’re ambling ahead, and your arms are sore, it can feel like anything but enjoyable.

It’s no fun to walk your dog when they’re dragging you around, or worse yet - when you’re worried about what they might do when you see another dog or person!  You’d love to just relax and know they’ll listen… and have friends over knowing your dog won’t jump all over them, and won’t bark and go nuts when the doorbell rings.

This program is the perfect way to get things started.  Together we’ll teach your dog to look to you for direction instead of just listening when they feel like it.  Then you’ll be ready to conquer adventures together!  Hiking without worrying about what’s coming around the bend, enjoying relaxing days at the park, listening at home reliably, and then you can truly enjoy having a dog again.

This program is typically accomplished in about 3 weeks (with weekly lessons at your house) and includes:
  • 6 commands & behaviors: Sit (and stay automatically!), down (and stay!), Place (go to a dog bed and stay), Heel (no more pulling!), Come, and Free (to let them out of sit, etc.).
  • Basic Door, Home, and People Manners
  • All Required Training Equipment
  • Email Support During The Program
  • Full Detailed Lesson Summaries with Video Following Each lesson to help you stay on track

Coming home from a long day at work can make finding the time to train your dog hard. Exhausted and ready to kick back and relax, you find your faithful companion jumping with joy that you’re home and ready for action. Our Stay and Train Programs will not only give you a huge jump start on making those changes you want, but they’ll provide you and your dog with a clean slate. We’ll use my home as a fresh start to teach them a new set of rules to live by. Your dog will live with me and my dogs and receive training multiple times a day. By having this structured lifestyle, we will not only be able to teach your dog what to do in a variety of distracting environments, but also what behaviors are acceptable and which ones are not.

The Wayward Dog Program: (2 Week Stay + Lessons for You)

Want your dog to listen to you without the hard work?  Let us do the hard work for you!  This program will give you all the benefits of our Explorer program in half the time because we’ll take care of your dog’s initial training, and then just teach you how to maintain it.

Your dog will come to stay with us for 2 weeks so we can teach them everything they need to know… All in the comfort of a home environment with a professional dog trainer (instead of a loud, crowded boarding kennel!).

Imagine your dog coming to you and sitting in front of you every time you call, even around distractions.  Everyone at the park will be so impressed!  On top of that, no more pulling you on the leash, jumping on your guests, nipping at the kids, barking at the window, chewing things around the house, or stealing things from the counters.

This program gives you a happy and attentive dog that listen the first time, every time you give a
command.

Our 2 Week Stay and Train Includes:
  • 2 Week Board & Train for your dog

"We fell in love with and adopted a 5 month old rescue while vacationing in Turks and Caicos. Aside from offering a stable home with a big yard and plenty of love, we didn’t know the first things about dogs. Our exuberant, high-energy puppy, Saylor, was enrolled in TGL’s 3 week board-and-train to help transform her from an unschooled puppy to a well behaved pup on her way to world domination.Tim/TGL evaluated and custom designed the training to suit Saylor’s and our needs. During this 3 week training program, a strong routine was put in place for Saylor by providing structure, correcting bad habits and dealing with her anxiety issues. Saylor learned the basic obedience skills and we couldn’t believe the transformation when we got her back! We still have a long way to go in working to enforce everything Saylor has learned from her time at TGL but Tim has been available to provide guidance and answer any questions we have. We can’t thank TGL enough!"

Today we said farewell to the adorable Dora who just finished her board and train stay with us. _ To make the most out of her go-home lesson and the wonderful weather, we headed out for an off-leash hike while we reviewed the changes we've made. _ When it comes to giving dogs the good stuff, a lot of us feel tempted to rush right to the finish line, to give our dogs freedom. Freedom to hike off-leash, freedom to make their own choices... _ The thing is, we shouldn't give our dogs freedom, freedom should be earned. _ By using training to teach our dogs what we want and what we don't want, how to do it and what the rules are, we can put them in a variety of situations without any fear of the "what ifs." _ What if we come across another dog, what if we pass by a big group of people, what if we see another animal. _ Instead, we use that ultimate goal as a motivator, and work towards it. This way, when the dog has that freedom, it's freedom earned. This allows us to have them in a position where we are able to effectively communicate with them, guide them, and help them when they struggle. _ It's not a game of "what ifs" but instead the calm and relaxing walk in the park that traveling with our dogs should be. _ Everyone did such a great job during today's lesson and I couldn't be more proud of the awesome work Dora has done and the commitment her owners have to bringing out the best version of their dog! _ Be sure to check out all the clips from our awesome outing today. I know some dogs who had a great time!

The Tranquil Dog Program: (5+ Weeks + Unlimited Lessons + Lifetime Support)

A dog with a lot of energy can become isolating and embarrassing when our dogs should be one of the higher points in the day.  This program will give you the complete freedom to enjoy your dog.

From all the benefits of knowing they will always come when called every time, to hanging out and relaxing while you have friends and family over, your dog will learn how to be part of the family. Taking your dog out into the world will provide a great break from the stress of a hard day’s work with a buddy who will follow you anywhere without a care in the world.

The Tranquil Dog Program will help you channel your dog’s energy so that they are calm when you want them to be, and ready for play when the time is right.
We will give you a break from the constant battle for rest while your dog learns how to slow down and take a breath, rather than reflexive reacting from one moment to the next.
Once they've finished training with us, we'll be right there with you every step of the way. From unlimited follow-up lessons and a lifetime of support, we'll help you stay on the right path should you ever need help finding your footing again.

Nothing says nice and relaxing like being able to lounge around with your buddies. Obedience not only allows your dogs to listen when out and about in public, but also allows you to enjoy more peaceful and relaxing moments inside as well. Here we have a short clip of Jax, Cyrus, and Cassandra on place while Saylor practices her down command! _ Having these guys practice just hanging out and staying put inside is a great way to help save that energy for when you want it and to help your dog become less sound sensitive and reactive in your home too!

A post shared by Tim (@theguidingleash) on Jul 22, 2018 at 9:01pm PDT

Today was a sad day here at #theguidingleash it was Jax’s last day with us! _ As a little parting gift to him, and much preparation, Jax had his first play session with a dog in a very very long time. _ Jax is a high energy, high drive dog. _ As a result of all that intensity, we can see what looks like a lot of nastiness when we are out on walks. _ Jax would whine, bark and eventually lunge when he sees another dog. With how big a production he made the whole affair, it’s easy to write him off as dog aggressive. _ Jax gets aroused when he sees another dog and he can’t meet them, that he gets frustrated. That leash becomes a huge barrier which escalated his frustration. This frustration builds and builds until all that energy comes burst out at the seems! _ Now Jax certainly isn’t the kind of dog who can play with any dog out there, and he shouldn’t be greeting dogs on leash (no dogs should greet on leash!) we don’t want to pattern that idea of getting to greet every dog or person he sees l, but he is certainly capable of playing with the right dogs. - He can be a bully sometimes, and certainly is intense, but he isn’t dog aggressive. He’s selective. _ This is the benefit of going slow. _ So many people rush to make their dogs “love” things. You can’t force that. _ Existence must always come before acceptance. _ While Jax was with us he had weeks to get used to being around dogs. Coexisting with dogs, before we ever out him in a position to interact with them. _ It’s because we went so slow that things went so well. It doesn’t take much for that explosion of excitement to become the wrong kind of explosion. _ When your dog meets another dog, how do they react? How do you like to handle that first meet? Let us know in the comments below!
